When storage actually makes sense
A short gap between possession dates is the most common reason, but storage also helps when downsizing and sorting through what to keep, or when a home is being staged for sale and furniture needs to come out temporarily.
If the gap is only a day or two, it is sometimes simpler to hold the load on the truck overnight rather than moving it into and back out of a storage unit, and we can talk through which option fits your timeline better.
What to ask before booking a unit
Check whether the facility is climate controlled, particularly for wood furniture, electronics, or anything sensitive to damp conditions common on the coast. Ask about access hours as well, since a unit that closes early does you no good if your new place is ready in the evening.
Confirm insurance coverage for the contents, since most facilities offer only limited protection by default and a separate policy may be worth the cost for higher-value items.
Packing for storage versus packing for a move
Items headed for storage benefit from slightly different packing than items going straight into a new home. Heavier furniture at the back and bottom, lighter and more fragile boxes on top and near the door, makes retrieval easier if you need something before the whole load comes out again.
Label boxes clearly even if they are only going in for a short stay, since a few weeks is enough time to forget which box has the kettle in it.
Getting the load back out
Book the retrieval date as soon as your new address is confirmed, since storage facilities and moving schedules both get busier toward the end of the month. We coordinate the pickup from storage the same way we would a normal move, with a walkthrough of what is coming out and where it is going.
If anything changed in the gap, an extra piece of furniture bought in the meantime, for example, just let the crew know before the day so the truck size still matches the job.
